Chapter 2 · Verse 67

Sankhya Yoga

सांख्ययोग

इन्द्रियाणां हि चरतां यन्मनोऽनुविधीयते | तदस्य हरति प्रज्ञां वायुर्नावमिवाम्भसि ||२-६७||

indriyāṇāṃ hi caratāṃ yanmano.anuvidhīyate . tadasya harati prajñāṃ vāyurnāvamivāmbhasi ||2-67||

In plain words

You need to guard your mind from blindly following your physical senses. When you let your thoughts drift toward sensory pleasures, you fall under the spell of maya, the illusion of the material world. This mental drifting completely sweeps away your discrimination, dragging you off your spiritual path just like a fierce wind sweeps a boat off course.

Translation

2.67 For, when the mind follows the senses experiencing their objects, his understanding is carried away by them as the wind carries away a ship on the waters.

Meaning

The mind which constantly dwells on the sensual objects and moves in company with the senses destroys altogether the discrimination of the man. Just as the wind carries away a boat from its course so also the mind carries away the aspirant from his spiritual path and turns,him towards the objects of the senses.
