Chapter 3 · Verse 14

Karma Yoga

कर्मयोग

अन्नाद्भवन्ति भूतानि पर्जन्यादन्नसम्भवः | यज्ञाद्भवति पर्जन्यो यज्ञः कर्मसमुद्भवः ||३-१४||

annādbhavanti bhūtāni parjanyādannasambhavaḥ . yajñādbhavati parjanyo yajñaḥ karmasamudbhavaḥ ||3-14||

In plain words

You need to see yourself as an active participant in the great, interconnected cycle of life. All living beings depend on food, which comes from rain, which is generated by selfless sacrifice. This sacrifice is born of karma, the active work you do, showing that your actions sustain the entire universe.

Translation

3.14 From food arise all beings (i.e., their bodies); from rain food is produced; from sacrifice comes rain; and sacrifice springs from activity.

Meaning

Here Yajna means Apurva or the subtle principle or the unseen form which a sacrifice assumes between the time of its performance and the time when its fruits manifest themselves.

Word by word

अन्नात् from food भवन्ति come forth भूतानि beings पर्जन्यात् from rain अन्नसम्भवः production of food यज्ञात् from sacrifice भवति arises पर्जन्यः rain यज्ञः sacrifice कर्मसमुद्भवः born of action.
