Chapter 3

Chapter 3 · Verse 1

Karma Yoga

कर्मयोग

अर्जुन उवाच | ज्यायसी चेत्कर्मणस्ते मता बुद्धिर्जनार्दन | तत्किं कर्मणि घोरे मां नियोजयसि केशव ||३-१||

arjuna uvāca . jyāyasī cetkarmaṇaste matā buddhirjanārdana . tatkiṃ karmaṇi ghore māṃ niyojayasi keśava ||3-1||

In plain words

You must resolve the apparent conflict between quiet contemplation and active duty in your life. If spiritual wisdom, or jnana, is superior to physical action, you might wonder why you must still perform your difficult karma, which means worldly deeds. True spiritual growth requires you to understand how these two paths connect rather than choosing one over the other.

Translation

3.1 Arjuna said If, O Krsna, you consider that Buddhi (knowledge) is superior to works, why do you engage me in this terrible deed?

Meaning

In verses 49 50 and 51 of chapter II. Lord Krsihna has spoken very highly about Buddhi Yoga. He again asks Arjuna to fight. That is the reason why Arjuna is perplexed now.

Word by word

ज्यायसी superior चेत् if कर्मणः than action ते by Thee मता thought बुद्धिः knowledge जनार्दन O Janardana तत् then किम् why कर्मणि in action घोरे terrible माम् me नियोजयसि Thou engagest केशव O Kesava.
